Hieronder een aantal reacties m.b.t. het djembelesboek Ritmes uit Baro.

Niels Fleurke schreef samen met zijn leermeester Mansa Camio het boek Ritmes uit Baro: Traditionele West-Afrikaanse Percussieritmes voor djembe en doundouns.
Bij toeval is Niels Fleurke vijftien jaar geleden in dit dorp in Oost-Guinee terechtgekomen en is er sindsdien regelmatig naar teruggereisd. Hij leerde daar de ritmes van Mansa Camio. Het boek is een heel zorgvuldige, uitgebreide methode geworden, met een cd boordevol mp3´s om te studeren, en 1 cd waarop de muziek wordt voorgespeeld, zoals die in groepsverband moet gaan klinken, met daarbij ook nog play-along versies. Tekst en uitleg zijn helder en de Baro-gemeenschap mag er trots op zijn dat hun erfgoed op deze manier is vastgelegd. Over notatiemethodes kun je altijd discussieren. Deze oogt wat petieterig en moeilijk leesbaar, maar dat is een kwestie van even wennen.

Knap gedaan om ’t op deze manier uit te brengen. Leuk en zeer leerzaam. De cd’s zijn erg mooi ingespeeld, alleen maar lof over je boek, goede informatie!

It’s a great book! well done! First of all, the text is very informative and the most important information about African drumming is all put in, yet the style is easy and to the point. You have got a talent for that! I can hear it in your drumming too.
The second plus of your book: the abundance and authentic sound of the solo patterns, some of them not even easy to play, the many variations for the duns, which are usually not to be found in other books, and the information on the rhythms, again very much to the point. All this makes your book a treasure for djembe players!

Dieses Lehrbuch ist das bei weitem beste, das mir je in die Finger gekommen ist und wirklich empfehlenswert. Die Beschreibung “fur Anfanger” ist allerdings krasses Understatement (mit Soli, Dja und Bandojei). Es ist schade, dass es bislang keine deutsche, englische oder franzosische Ausgabe gibt.

You did a great job with this book Ritmes uit Baro. I also see that you really thought about it. It is nice that there are variations and echauffements for All instruments. Also the ground rhythm in addition to practice solos etc. Good structured, nice layout and historical background to put the music and its origin into the right place. There is enough for intermediate people to learn. I guess for beginners it is quite a lot and they still have to fight with basic things.
